How to use Cysill in Microsoft Outlook
Locating the add-in
The Cysill button can be found when composing a new email or replying to an
email. It appears in the Outlook ribbon, in the same tab as the standard
composition tools.
Checking your text
- Write your email in Welsh
- Select the text you wish to check
- Click the Cysill button in the ribbon
- A task pane will appear on the right side of the window
Cysill will analyse the selected text and display any spelling, grammar, and
mutation errors.
Correcting errors
When Cysill identifies an error:
- A card will appear showing:
- The error type (spelling or grammar)
- The text in context, with the error highlighted
- A brief explanation of the error
- Up to five suggested corrections
- Click on the correction you wish to use
- Press the Accept button to confirm the change
- The card will disappear and the change counter will increment
- After completing all corrections, click Update to apply the changes to
your email
Using the personal dictionary
If Cysill flags a word that is correct but not in its dictionary:
- Click the Learn button on the error card
- The word will be added to your personal dictionary
- The word will not be flagged as an error in future sessions
- To manage your personal dictionary:
- Click the dictionary button in the Outlook ribbon
- A list of your learned words will appear
- Click on any word to delete it from the dictionary
Ignoring words
If you wish to ignore a word for the current session only:
- Click the Ignore button on the error card
- The card will disappear
- The word may be flagged again in future sessions
Changing the interface language
Cysill is available in Welsh and English:
- Look at the bottom of the Cysill task pane
- Click on Cymraeg or English to switch language
- All interface labels will update immediately
If the Cysill button does not appear
If you cannot see the Cysill button in the ribbon:
- Look at the upper right corner of the email
- If Outlook is displaying a simplified version of the ribbon, click the down
arrow to reveal all buttons

Overview
Cysill is a Welsh language spell-checker and grammar correction add-in for
Microsoft Outlook developed by Bangor University’s Language Technologies Unit
(Uned Technolegau Iaith).

Security & privacy
Local processing architecture
The add-in processes all text locally on the user’s device. The proofing runs
in the browser / desktop app using WebAssembly. Email content is not
transmitted to external servers for analysis. The user’s personal dictionary is
stored in browser local storage and is not shared between devices or programs.
Permissions required
ReadWriteItem allows the add-in to:
- Read content of emails being composed
- Modify selected text in emails

External connections
- CDN resources. This is required for the add-in to function. Add-in files are
loaded from our Content Delivery Network, served via HTTPS.
Supported platforms
- Microsoft Outlook (Desktop App – Windows)
- Outlook 365 (Web – All platforms)
The MacOS desktop app is not currently supported.
Installation & deployment
Option 1: centralised deployment
Deploy via Microsoft 365 Admin Center:
- Download the manifest.xml file
- Access Microsoft 365 Admin Center
- Navigate to Settings > Integrated apps > Add-ins
- Upload the manifest file
- Assign to users or groups
Option 2: manual installation
Individual users can side-load the add-in:
- Provide users with the manifest.xml file
- Go to https://aka.ms/olksideload and wait for the pop-up
- Select My add-ins > Add a custom add-in > Add from file
- Browse and select the manifest file
- Confirm installation
- Microsoft will sync the add-in to your desktop app automatically, it may
take a day. Reload the web version (Ctrl+Shift+R) and you should see the
add-in there immediately.
Verification
After installation, users should see a Cysill button in the Outlook ribbon
when composing new emails or replies. It is available in the Message and
Insert ribbons. Clicking the button opens a task pane on the right side.
